Whatever your problem,
change is possible.
Debbie Beckerman
MA(Oxon), NCS Accredited, Cognitive Behaviour Therapist.
I am a therapist and counsellor specialising in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). I focus on a range of issues including stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia, eating disorders and psychological difficulties experienced by young adults.
I offer sessions at my consulting room in Belsize Park, North London, and online via Zoom. My aim is to help you understand and change your thought processes and behaviours, and develop strategies and tools so that you can live a more balanced, peaceful life.
The CBT model Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) forms the foundation of my approach, but I also integrate it with other therapies that are tailored to you, such as Solution-Focused Therapy, Compassion-Focused Therapy, Mindfulness and Relaxation techniques.
Starting therapy can often feel like a big step, so I understand that prospective clients can at first feel daunted. I offer an empathetic, collaborative approach and the length of therapy is always discussed and agreed upon fully with the client. Contact me for an initial, free assessment to see if I can be of help.
Lead a happier, fuller life.
When life becomes a struggle, we all need to feel that we can access strategies to get through those difficult times and any future challenges we might have to face.
I use practical, goal-focused techniques to help you to help yourself. By learning how to challenge and ultimately change your underlying thought patterns, and how to think in a more rational, flexible way about the issues that are troubling you, you will be able to apply these skills to many other areas of your life.
Problems I can help with:
Anxiety
When we are anxious we do a lot of ‘what if’ thinking, and consciously or not, we are demanding certainty about the future, or about the situation which is making us anxious. Difficulties arise when anxiety becomes so overwhelming in strength or frequency that it prevents us from living in the way we would like.
CBT, along with other techniques I provide, can be very effective in treating many of the harmful behaviours, symptoms and thoughts linked to anxiety. These can include avoidance, procrastination, heart palpitations, digestive problems, and binge drinking.
Other anxiety-based problems that I can help with include insomnia, social anxiety, general anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), irritable bowel disorder (IBS) and eating disorders.
Depression
Depression can occur for a whole range of reasons. It can start when we experience a sense of failure or loss (perceived or real), and their implications for the future. Depression can be accompanied by feelings of anxiety, and although it can be triggered by a real-life event, sometimes there is no specific cause.
Whatever its origin, when we are depressed, we feel there is no hope, we can no longer find our own way out of those dark feelings and cannot see how they will ever improve. Symptoms and behaviours include a loss of interest or pleasure in life, poor sleep, loss of appetite, feeling tearful, and a need to numb our feelings of hopelessness and helplessness with alcohol, drugs, or food.
Depression is extremely common, affecting people of all ages, but young people in particular. CBT can improve mild/moderate depression and, in more severe cases, can also be effective, when used in conjunction with medication.
Anxiety and depression are the two most common reasons why people seek help and for which CBT is particularly effective, as recognised by NICE (the National Institute of Clinical Excellence).
Other problems
Other problems can also be helped by CBT, either when used on its own or in conjunction with other therapies.
Issues involving anger, hurt, low self-confidence, guilt, shame, envy or jealousy can all be helped by a tailored, holistic approach involving CBT and therapies such as Compassion-Focused therapy, Solution-Focused therapy, relaxation and mindfulness exercises.
A preliminary assessment with a new client is therefore always preferable.
